Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA)-Medical Technology

The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has launched the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA)-Medical Technology, or महा MedTech.

Key Points:

  • Objective:
    • To accelerate innovation in India’s medical technology sector.
    • To reduce dependence on costly imports and enhance access to affordable, high-quality medical devices.
    • To foster self-reliance in the MedTech domain in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • Funding Support:
    • The Mission offers milestone-linked funding of ₹5–25 crore per project, and up to ₹50 crore in exceptional cases.
    • Funding will be available for academic and R&D institutions, hospitals, startups, MSMEs, MedTech industries, and collaborative consortia.
  • Scope of Support:
    The scheme covers a broad spectrum of medical innovations, including:
    • Medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics (IVDs).
    • Implants, assistive and surgical devices, and consumables.
    • Key subcomponents and software-based medical solutions.
  • Significance:
    • Aims to make India a global hub for MedTech innovation and manufacturing.
    • Will promote affordable healthcare solutions and domestic R&D capacity.
    • Expected to strengthen the healthcare innovation ecosystem and public–private collaboration in medical research.
