Mizoram gets its first railway line

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025 inaugurated Mizoram’s first-ever railway line and flagged off the state’s maiden Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with Delhi.

Mega Bairabi–Sairang Project

The ₹8,070-crore Bairabi–Sairang railway line is regarded as one of the most challenging projects in Indian Railways’ history. Sanctioned in 2008–09 and with construction beginning in 2015, the 51-km line features:

  • 45 tunnels
  • 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges
  • 5 road overbridges and 6 underpasses

Engineering Marvels

Among the highlights is Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, which stands 114 metres tall, higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar, making it the tallest pier railway bridge in India. The route also covers four main stations — Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang — apart from Bairabi.

Boost to Connectivity and Economy

According to the PMO, the new rail link will ensure safe, efficient, and affordable travel for people in the region. It will also enhance logistical efficiency, ensuring timely supply of food grains, fertilisers, and other essential commodities, thereby improving regional accessibility and economic growth.
