Mt Merag-III and Mt Kangju Kangri

A joint expedition team has successfully summited Mt Merag-III (6,480M) and Mt Kangju Kangri (6,710M), the highest peaks in the Pangong Tso region of Ladakh. This achievement highlights the resilience of India’s mountaineers and the nation’s growing strength in high-altitude adventure sports.

About Pangong Tso Lake

  • Location and Size: The Pangong Tso (lake) is situated at a height of 14,270 feet (4,350M) above sea level, making it one of the world’s highest brackish water lakes. It is approximately 5 km wide and 134 km long. One-third of the lake lies in India, while the remaining two-thirds are in China.
  • Unique Features:
    • Color-Changing Water: The lake is famous for its mesmerizing ability to change colors, appearing blue, grey-green, and red at different times of the day.
    • Breeding Ground for Birds: During the summer, it serves as a breeding ground for various birds, including bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks, black-necked cranes, and seagulls.
    • Complete Freezing: Despite its saline water, the lake freezes completely during the winter season.
  • Surrounding Landscape: The lake is surrounded by furry milky clouds and stark mountains, creating a stunning visual impression that reflects beautifully in the water.
