Murikooti pacha

Researchers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden & Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Palode (Kerala) have developed an innovative multifunctional wound-healing pad by harnessing the medicinal properties of the red ivy plant (Strobilanthes alternata), locally known as murikooti pacha.

Breakthrough Discovery of Acteoside

The team at the Centre of Excellence in Phytochemical Nanotechnology, JNTBGRI, identified and isolated acteoside, a natural compound with proven pharmacological potential, from the red ivy plant. This marks the first-ever linkage of acteoside to the red ivy species, according to researchers.

Advanced Wound-Healing Pad

Using nanomaterials such as electro-spun fibers, the scientists created a multi-layered wound pad with acteoside as the key ingredient. The pad demonstrates high healing efficacy even at low concentrations (0.2%), making it a cost-effective and potent biomedical innovation.

Potential Applications

Researchers believe the new wound pad could revolutionize wound care and tissue regeneration therapies, offering a natural, nanotechnology-driven alternative for effective treatment.
