Musa indandamanensis

A 4.2-metre infructescence (fruit-bearing part) has been recorded in Musa indandamanensis, a wild banana species endemic to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

This is the longest infructescence ever recorded in banana species globally.

First documented in 2012 near Krishna Nala reserve forest, it was mentioned in scientific literature in 2014.

The discovery was published in Botany Letters, an international peer-reviewed journal, in early 2025.

Specimens are now on display in Indian museums, including the Indian Museum in Kolkata and the Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre museum.
