Nagauri Ashwagandha Gets GI Tag

The Centre has officially granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Nagauri Ashwagandha, positioning Nagaur district of Rajasthan as a new agricultural brand on the global map. The recognition marks a historic milestone for farmers of the Marwar region, especially those engaged in medicinal crop cultivation.

Second Major GI Achievement for Rajasthan Agriculture
After Sojat Mehendi, Nagauri Ashwagandha becomes Rajasthan’s second major GI-tagged product in the agricultural category, strengthening the state’s presence in high-value traditional crops.

Protection, Income and Export Potential
Experts note that the GI tag will:

  • Protect the authenticity and uniqueness of Nagauri Ashwagandha
  • Prevent misuse of the name by producers outside the region
  • Enhance farmers’ income, market recognition and export potential
  • Support branding of India’s traditional medicinal plants in global markets

Unique Agro-Climatic Advantage of Nagaur
Nagaur’s dry climate and sandy soil are ideally suited for Ashwagandha cultivation. These natural conditions give the produce distinct characteristics that set it apart from Ashwagandha grown in other regions.

Superior Medicinal Quality

  • Nagauri Ashwagandha has longer and thicker roots, rich in medicinal compounds, especially alkaloids
  • Its berries are known for their dark, bright red colour, widely regarded as an indicator of high quality and potency

Basis for GI Recognition
The GI tag has been granted based on these distinct physical, chemical and quality attributes, which are directly linked to the geographical conditions of Nagaur.
