National Fish Farmers Day 2025

The Department of Fisheries, Government of India, celebrated National Fish Farmers Day 2025 on July 10, 2025, at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The event underscored India’s commitment to advancing its fisheries sector.

Key Launches and Initiatives:

  • New Fisheries Clusters: Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D) and Ministry of Panchayati Raj, launched 17 new fisheries clusters under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These new additions bring the total number of fisheries clusters across India to 34, significantly upscaling efforts in the sector.
  • New Projects for 11 States: The Union Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 70 projects spanning across 11 states, with a total outlay of ₹105 crore.

Commemoration of Pioneers:

  • National Fish Farmers Day 2025 is celebrated to honor and commemorate the pioneering contributions of Professor Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury and his colleague Dr. K. H. Alikunhi.
  • On this day in 1957, they successfully guided the induced breeding and reproduction in Indian Major Carps using the Hypophysation technique. This breakthrough led to a revolution in Inland Aquaculture in India, fundamentally transforming the sector.
