National-Level Workshop on MISHTI Held in Andhra Pradesh

A national-level workshop on MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes) was successfully organised in Andhra Pradesh on 8–9 January 2026, bringing together policymakers, experts and stakeholders working on coastal ecology and livelihood enhancement.

About MISHTI Initiative

  • MISHTI aims at the development and conservation of mangrove ecosystems across India.
  • The initiative focuses on:
    • Mangrove restoration
    • Shoreline protection
    • Biodiversity conservation
    • Creation of tangible livelihood opportunities for coastal communities
  • It seeks to integrate environmental protection with income generation, making conservation economically sustainable.

Linkage with Climate Action

  • MISHTI contributes directly to the objectives of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC).
  • India became an active member of MAC during COP-27 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC)

  • MAC is a voluntary intergovernmental partnership launched at COP27 in 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
  • It was jointly initiated by the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
  • Member countries include India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan and Spain.

Objectives of MAC

  • Promote mangroves as nature-based solutions for:
    • Climate mitigation through carbon sequestration
    • Climate adaptation by enhancing coastal resilience
  • Activities include:
    • Raising global awareness
    • Sharing scientific and technical expertise
    • Supporting large-scale mangrove restoration efforts
