Foundation of the Election Commission of India
National Voters’ Day marks the establishment of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on January 25, 1950, under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution. The ECI is the constitutional authority entrusted with the control, supervision, and conduct of elections in India.

Theme for 2026
The theme for National Voters’ Day 2026 is “My India, My Vote”, with the tagline “Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy.” The theme highlights the central role of citizens in strengthening democratic governance.

Evolution of National Voters’ Day
Since its inception in 2011, National Voters’ Day has grown into one of the country’s most widespread civic celebrations, reaching every corner of India and engaging millions of voters, especially first-time voters.

Key Electoral Reforms by ECI
The Election Commission has introduced several reforms to strengthen electoral integrity and transparency:

• SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation): Enhanced voter awareness and participation.
• ECINET: Facilitated global sharing of electoral technologies.
• cVIGIL App: Enabled citizens to report Model Code of Conduct violations swiftly.
• 100% Webcasting at Polling Stations: Improved transparency and accountability.
• Fast-tracked EPIC Delivery: Reduced delivery time of voter ID cards to 15 days.

Role and Achievements of the Election Commission
The ECI has successfully conducted 18 General Elections and over 400 State Legislative Assembly elections to date. It also oversees elections to the Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Councils (where applicable), Union Territories of Puducherry and Delhi, and the high constitutional offices of the President and Vice President of India.

Composition of the Commission
The Election Commission of India is a multi-member body consisting of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners, ensuring collective decision-making in safeguarding India’s democratic processes.
