NATO Launches ‘Arctic Sentry’ Mission

NATO has announced the launch of a new mission, Arctic Sentry, aimed at bolstering security in the Arctic and High North regions. The move comes amid increasing strategic focus on the Arctic and follows recent discussions between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

The mission was initiated on February 11 by NATO’s Allied Command Operations (ACO), which is responsible for planning and executing all NATO exercises, activities, and operations.

Strengthening NATO’s Arctic Posture

Arctic Sentry is described as a multi-domain activity designed to reinforce NATO’s posture in the Arctic, where the Alliance’s presence has been steadily expanding. The initiative reflects growing concerns over:

  • Russia’s increased military activity in the region
  • China’s expanding strategic and economic interest in the Arctic

The mission follows a meeting between President Trump and Secretary General Rutte in Davos, Switzerland, where both leaders agreed that NATO should collectively assume greater responsibility for defending the region.

Leadership and Command Structure

The operation will be led by Joint Force Command Norfolk (JFC Norfolk) — NATO’s newest Joint Force Command. Since December, JFC Norfolk’s area of responsibility has been expanded to include the entire Arctic and High North region.
