Neelus sikkimensi-A New Species of Springtail Discovered in Sikkim

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of Collembola (springtails) from the high-altitude soils of Sikkim.

Key Discovery

  • The new species has been named Neelus sikkimensis.
  • The findings were published on December 1 in the Journal of the Entomological Research Society.
  • This marks the first recorded presence of the genus Neelus in India.
  • With this discovery, the global count of Neelus species has increased to eight.

About Springtails (Collembola)

  • Springtails are minute soil-dwelling invertebrates found across diverse ecosystems.
  • Despite their tiny size, they play a crucial role in soil health and ecosystem functioning.

Ecological Significance

  • Help in soil nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter.
  • Feed on moulds, fungi, and decaying plant material, keeping soil ecosystems balanced.
  • Improve soil structure and fertility, supporting plant and moss growth.
  • Widely regarded as beneficial organisms, especially in closed ecosystems like terrariums.

Importance of the Discovery

  • Highlights the rich but underexplored soil biodiversity of the Himalayan region.
  • Strengthens India’s contribution to global taxonomic and ecological research.
  • Underlines the importance of high-altitude ecosystems in sustaining unique microfauna.
