New Indian Standard for Incense Sticks Released

Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, on 26 December, released a new Indian Standard for incense sticks (agarbattis) to enhance consumer safety, indoor air quality and product quality.

About the New Standard

  • The standard is titled IS 19412:2025 – Incense Sticks (Agarbatti) — Specification.
  • It has been developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • The standard lays down specifications related to raw materials, fragrance ingredients, safety parameters and quality benchmarks.

Key Provisions

  • Prohibits the use of certain insecticidal chemicals and synthetic fragrance substances that may be harmful to human health, indoor air quality and the environment.
  • Focuses on ensuring safer emissions from agarbattis used indoors.
  • Products complying with IS 19412:2025 will be eligible to carry the BIS Standard Mark, helping consumers make informed choices.

Standard Formulation Process

  • The standard was formulated by the Fragrance and Flavour Sectional Committee of BIS.
  • It followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, including industry representatives and experts.

  • India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of agarbattis.
  • The industry is valued at around ₹8,000 crore annually.
  • Exports worth approximately ₹1,200 crore are made to over 150 countries.
