NHAI Simplifies ‘Know Your Vehicle’ (KYV) Process for FASTag Users

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users to make it more user-friendly and reduce procedural burdens.

Key Highlights:

  • Background:
    • The KYV process was introduced in 2024 to prevent leakages and misuse in the FASTag system, as some truck drivers were allegedly using car tags to evade higher toll charges.
    • Under the earlier system, non-compliance could result in temporary suspension of FASTag services, causing inconvenience to users.
  • Revised Guidelines by IHMCL:
    • As per new directions issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an NHAI subsidiary, FASTag services will not be discontinued for non-compliant vehicles immediately.
    • Users will now be given sufficient time and opportunity to complete the KYV verification.
  • About the KYV System:
    • The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) system requires users to submit their vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) and a vehicle image to confirm that the FASTag is affixed to the correct vehicle.
    • The process must be repeated every three years to prevent misuse.
    • It is aligned with the One Vehicle-One Tag (OVOT) mandate, which became mandatory from 31st October 2024.
  • Key Changes in the New Process:
    • Side photographs of vehicles (Car, Jeep, or Van) are no longer required.
    • Only a front-facing photograph showing the number plate and FASTag affixed on the windshield needs to be uploaded.
  • Significance:
The revised KYV process aims to enhance convenience for users, ensure better compliance, and maintain transparency and efficiency in toll collection across India’s national highway network.
