Nitrofuran Issue-FSSAI Clarifies Eggs Are Safe for Consumption

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 20 December stated that eggs available in India are safe for human consumption.

  • It dismissed recent claims linking egg consumption to cancer risk as misleading, scientifically unsupported, and capable of causing unnecessary public alarm.

Allegations Addressed

  • Reports and social media posts had alleged the presence of carcinogenic substances, particularly nitrofuran metabolites (AOZ), in eggs.
  • FSSAI categorically rejected these claims.

Regulatory Position on Nitrofurans

  • Nitrofurans are a group of antibiotics banned for use in food-producing animals.
  • Their use is strictly prohibited at all stages of poultry and egg production under the:
    • Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011.

Residue Limits Explained

  • FSSAI has prescribed an Extraneous Maximum Residue Limit (EMRL) of 1.0 µg/kg for nitrofuran metabolites.
  • This limit is:
    • Set solely for regulatory enforcement purposes.
    • Not an indication of permissible use of nitrofurans.

Alignment with Global Standards

  • FSSAI emphasised that India’s food safety regulations are aligned with international practices.
  • Both the European Union and the United States:
    • Prohibit nitrofurans in food-producing animals.
    • Use reference points for action or guideline values only as enforcement tools, similar to India.
