The Norwegian Nobel Committee, on 16 January 2026, clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize remains inseparably linked to the laureate, a day after the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner gave part of her award to U.S. President Donald Trump.

What Happened

  • Maria Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, handed over her Nobel Peace Prize gold medal to former U.S. President Donald Trump on 16 January 2026.
  • Mr. Trump publicly thanked her for the gesture.

About the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize Award

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Ms. Machado comprised:

  • A gold medal
  • A diploma
  • 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately USD 1.19 million)

Clarification by the Norwegian Nobel Committee

  • The committee stated that there are no restrictions under the Nobel Foundation’s statutes on how a laureate may use the prize components.
