North Eastern Region District SDG Index Report (2023-24)

NITI Aayog today released the second edition of the North Eastern Region (NER) District Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index Report (2023-24). This report assesses the performance of 121 districts across the eight North Eastern states on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Report Development and Key Findings:

  • Collaboration: The Index was developed by NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDoNER), with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • Top and Bottom Performers:
    • Hnahthial in Mizoram emerged as the top-performing district with a composite score of 81.43.
    • Longding in Arunachal Pradesh ranked lowest with a score of 58.71.
  • Performance Categories:
    • All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura achieved the Front Runner status (scores between 65–99).
    • No district in these states (or the NER overall) fell into the Achiever (score of 100) or Aspirant (score below 50) categories.
  • Consistent State Performance:
    • Sikkim demonstrated the most consistent performance across its districts, with only a 5.5-point difference between its highest and lowest-scoring districts.
    • Tripura also showed strong performance with minimal intra-state variation.

Role as a Policy Tool:

The NER District SDG Index 2023–24 is intended to serve as a crucial policy tool for:

  • Evidence-based governance.
  • Resource allocation.
  • Accelerating sustainable and inclusive development in the North Eastern Region.
