NSO launches “Statathon – A Data Journey Towards Viksit Bharat”

The National Statistical Office (NSO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, has launched “Statathon – A Data Journey Towards Viksit Bharat.” This national-level Grand Challenge aims to transform official statistics in India by leveraging emerging technologies and innovative solutions, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Key Highlights of the Statathon:

  • Objective: To modernize India’s official statistical system using cutting-edge technologies like AI.
  • Organizer: Organized under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s (MoSPI) Data Innovation Lab.
  • Commemoration: The Statathon commemorates 75 years of the National Sample Survey (NSS).
  • Problem Statements: Participants are invited to address five problem statements covering various phases of the data lifecycle (from collection to dissemination):
    1. Developing an API Gateway for survey datasets.
    2. An AI-Powered Smart Survey Tool.
    3. An AI-Enhanced Application for Automated Data Processing.
    4. Semantic Search for Occupation Classification.
    5. Evaluation and Enhancement of Data Anonymisation Practices.
  • Participation & Evaluation:
    • Registrations are open for one month.
    • Evaluation will occur in two phases.
    • Shortlisted teams will receive mentorship, training, and financial support.
    • Prizes will be awarded to winners and runner-ups.
  • Vision: The initiative underscores the Government of India’s commitment to advancing data systems through open innovation and fostering a collaborative ecosystem for developing digital public goods, contributing towards a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
