Oju hydroelectric project

An expert panel of the Union Environment Ministry has recommended environmental clearance for the 2,220 MW Oju hydroelectric project proposed on the Subansiri river in Taksing near the China border.

Largest Project in Subansiri Basin

The Oju project is the largest in terms of approved capacity among the cascade of hydroelectric projects planned in the Subansiri basin. Other proposed projects include Niare, Naba, Nalo, Dengser, Upper Subansiri and Lower Subansiri, according to the project’s environment impact assessment report.

Project Location and Developer

The project is proposed 5 km downstream of Redi village in Taksing block of Upper Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh, and will be developed by Oju Subansiri Hydro Power Corporation Pvt Ltd.

Capacity and Structure

The project will comprise:

  • Main power plant: 2,100 MW capacity
  • Dam-toe plant: 120 MW capacity

Environmental and Social Impact

The project will require diversion of 750 hectares of forest land, with around 43 hectares submerged. A total of nine families will be displaced.

Public Hearing and Approval

The mandatory public hearing was conducted in August 2024 at Redi village. The Ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on hydroelectric and river valley projects has now recommended environmental clearance for the project.
