One District One Product (ODOP)

The year 2018 marked the beginning of a transformative journey in India’s local economic development. As part of an innovative state-led experiment, Moradabad’s brassware was chosen as the district’s signature product under the newly launched One District One Product (ODOP) initiative in Uttar Pradesh.

Moradabad was not an isolated case but the first chapter of a nationwide movement. As of December 2025, the ODOP initiative has been adopted at the national level and scaled to over 770 districts, positively impacting millions of artisans, entrepreneurs and farmers. What began as a state initiative has evolved into one of India’s most prominent programmes for local economic transformation.

The ODOP initiative is spearheaded by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It seeks to unlock the unique economic potential of each district, promote balanced regional growth, and empower local artisans and entrepreneurs to compete in national and global markets.

Under the scheme, States and Union Territories select products based on existing local ecosystems, after which the final list is communicated to DPIIT. Currently, over 1,200 ODOP products are listed on DPIIT’s digital portal, spanning sectors such as textiles, food processing, handicrafts and minerals.

To further strengthen market access, PM Ekta Malls (Unity Malls) have been envisaged as dedicated retail and exhibition hubs for ODOP, GI-tagged and handicraft products. Each mall is planned to provide earmarked space for every State and Union Territory, enhancing visibility, consumer outreach and sales opportunities for district-level specialties across India.
