‘One-third of India’s children age 5-9 have high triglycerides’

The fourth edition of ‘Children in India 2025’, first published in 2008, was released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation during the 29th Conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations (CoCSSO) on September 25, 2025, in Chandigarh.

Rising Health Concerns

The report highlights alarming health trends among children:

  • Over one-third of children aged 5–9 may have high triglycerides, a blood fat linked to increased risk of heart disease later in life.
  • States with highest prevalence include Jammu & Kashmir (50%), West Bengal (67%), Sikkim (64%), Nagaland (55%), and Assam (57%).
  • States with lowest prevalence are Kerala (16.6%) and Maharashtra (19.1%).

Newborn Mortality

Prematurity and low birth weight remain the leading causes of newborn deaths in the first 29 days, with a national prevalence of 48%.

  • Birth asphyxia and trauma during birth: 16%
  • Pneumonia: 9%

Education and Literacy

The report also provides insights on education and child development:

  • Overall literacy among children and adolescents: 63.1%
  • Literacy for children aged 7 and above: 73.1%

Other Key Findings

The report compiles data on multiple aspects of child welfare, including education, development, crimes involving children, and child protection measures.
