Pechora surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems

In a major boost to indigenous defence modernisation, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a contract worth approximately ₹591.3 crore to Alpha Design Technologies Ltd (ADTL) for the overhaul and digitisation of the Pechora surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The initiative marks a significant step in the IAF’s efforts to modernise its air defence network using homegrown technology, reducing dependence on legacy foreign systems.

Key Highlights

  • The upgrade is being led by Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies, strengthening the Atmanirbhar Bharat push in the defence sector.
  • The modernised Pechora system is expected to support India’s multi-layered air defence architecture, enhancing the capability to counter modern aerial threats.

About the Pechora SAM System

  • The Pechora has been in service with the IAF since the 1970s and was originally designed during the Soviet era.
  • It employs radar-guided V-600 missiles and the 4R90 Yatagan radar, which uses five parabolic antennas to detect, track and engage targets.
  • The system has a detection range of up to 100 km and can intercept targets at altitudes of up to 25 km.
  • It is capable of simultaneously engaging two aerial threats travelling at speeds of up to 900 m/s, making it effective against low- to mid-altitude targets.
