Peñico & Caral civilization

Archaeologists today unveiled a 3,500-year-old city in Peru, believed to have served as a vital trading hub. This ancient urban center likely connected Pacific coast cultures with those in the Andes and Amazon regions, flourishing concurrently with early civilizations in the Middle East and Asia.

Key Details of the Discovery:

  • Location: The urban center, named Peñico, is situated in the northern Barranca province of Peru.
  • Altitude: Remains of stone and mud buildings are found constructed approximately 600 meters (1,970 feet) above sea level on a hillside terrace.
  • City Center: Drone footage released by researchers reveals that the city center is marked by a distinct circular structure on this terrace.
  • Founding Period: Peñico was founded between 1,800 and 1,500 BC.
  • Proximity to Caral: It is located close to where the Caral civilization, recognized as the oldest civilization in the Americas, developed 5,000 years ago.
  • Caral’s Significance: Caral, composed of 32 monumental structures, is considered a contemporary of ancient civilizations in Egypt, India, Sumeria, and China. However, researchers note a unique aspect of Caral: it developed in complete isolation, unlike its counterparts in other parts of the world.
