Phenome India “National Biobank”

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Vice President of CSIR, Dr. Jitendra Singh, inaugurated the state-of-the-art Phenome India “National Biobank” at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in Delhi. This ambitious project aims to create a robust data backbone for health research in India, drawing inspiration from successful global models like the UK Biobank.

Key Features and Objectives of the National Biobank:

  • Nationwide Cohort Study: The Biobank will serve as the foundation for a nationwide cohort study, collecting comprehensive genomic, lifestyle, and clinical data from 10,000 individuals across India.
  • Capturing India’s Unique Diversity: Unlike global counterparts, the Indian Biobank is specifically tailored to capture the country’s unparalleled diversity across geography, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds. This unique dataset will be crucial for understanding health and disease within the Indian context.
  • Advancing Medical Research: Researchers anticipate that this initiative will significantly aid in:
    • Early diagnosis of diseases.
    • Improving therapeutic targeting for various ailments.
    • Strengthening the fight against complex diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and rare genetic disorders.
  • Long-Term Data Rich Study: The Biobank is part of the broader Phenome India Project, designed as a long-term, data-rich study that will track the health trajectories of individuals over several years. This will help scientists uncover disease patterns, gene-environment interactions, and response to therapies specific to the Indian population.

India’s Evolving Scientific Landscape:

Minister Singh highlighted India’s rapidly evolving scientific landscape, citing recent advances in critical areas such as:

  • Quantum technology.
  • CRISPR-based genome editing.
  • The fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The Phenome India project exemplifies CSIR’s commitment to advancing precision medicine through a Predictive, Personalized, Participatory, and Preventive (P4) healthcare approach. This initiative is expected to be a game-changer for public health and biomedical research in India.
