Phytoplasma-induced root wilt disease

Phytoplasma-induced root wilt disease has devastated large tracts of traditional coconut-growing regions in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, posing a serious threat to coconut farmers and production in peninsular India.

About Root Wilt Disease
Root wilt disease is a debilitating but non-fatal disease of coconut palms. It was first identified over 150 years ago in Erattupetta, Kerala. Despite more than a century of sustained research, a definitive cure remains elusive.

Causal Organism
The disease is caused by phytoplasmas, which are phloem-restricted, plant-pathogenic bacteria. These pathogens disrupt nutrient transport within the plant.

Mode of Spread

  • Transmitted by insect vectors
  • Spread is aided by wind movement and continuous stretches of coconut plantations
  • Earlier, the disease spread was limited, but it is now expanding rapidly, catching many farmers unprepared

Research Efforts
The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kayamkulam, has been engaged in research on root wilt disease for over 150 years, yet no permanent cure has been found.

Impact on Coconut Farming
Coconut is one of the largest horticultural crops in peninsular India. In recent years, more farmers have shifted to coconut cultivation due to:

  • Labour shortages
  • High labour and management needs of annual crops
The unchecked spread of root wilt disease threatens this transition.

Regional Significance
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala together contribute about 82–83% of India’s total coconut production, making the disease a matter of national concern.

Economic and Cultural Importance of Coconut

  • Coconut palm is known as ‘Kalpavriksha’ (Tree of Heaven)
  • Every part of the palm has economic, nutritional, or cultural value

Institutional Support

  • The Coconut Development Board (CDB), headquartered in Kochi, is a statutory body under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare
  • The Government of India announces Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra

About Copra
Copra is the dried white kernel of coconut, used primarily for the extraction of coconut oil.
