PM Lays Foundation Stone of ₹42,000 Cr Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project

Banswara, Rajasthan, Sept 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd’s (ASHVINI) Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP), a 4×700 MW nuclear plant worth around ₹42,000 crore. The project will be among the largest nuclear power plants in India, supplying reliable base load energy and reinforcing the country’s commitment to clean energy and environmental stewardship.

Indigenous Nuclear Technology

  • The plant comprises four indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) with advanced safety features.
  • These reactors have been designed and developed by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).
  • It is part of India’s “fleet mode” programme, under which 10 identical 700 MW reactors are being constructed across the country to achieve cost efficiency, faster rollout, and consolidated expertise.

Joint Venture Model

  • The project is being developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI) — a joint venture of NPCIL (51%) and NTPC Ltd (49%).
  • The collaboration pools financial strength, technological know-how, and project management expertise of the two public sector giants.

Strategic Importance

  • The MBRAPP will supply clean, affordable, and reliable electricity to Rajasthan and other beneficiary states.
  • It will significantly contribute to India’s energy security and climate goals, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • By adopting advanced indigenous technology, the project furthers the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the strategic nuclear energy sector.

Economic & Employment Boost

  • The project is expected to create large-scale direct and indirect employment opportunities, benefiting local communities, businesses, and industries.
  • It will foster economic growth and regional development in Rajasthan, while also enhancing India’s nuclear energy footprint globally.
