PM Modi Addresses IBSA Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Summit on 23 November in Johannesburg, South Africa.

• Historic timing: The meeting coincided with the first-ever G20 Summit held on African soil and marked the culmination of four consecutive G20 presidencies by Global South countries, with the last three led by IBSA members.
• Significance of IBSA: The Prime Minister underscored that IBSA is more than a grouping of three nations; it is an important platform linking three continents, three major democracies, and three significant emerging economies.
• Origins of the forum: The IBSA Dialogue Forum was formalised when the foreign ministers of India, Brazil, and South Africa met in Brasilia on 6 June 2003 and issued the Brasilia Declaration.
