Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 8, 2026 returned home after concluding a two-day visit to Malaysia, during which he held wide-ranging talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with a focus on strengthening defence and security cooperation.

The visit saw the exchange of several key bilateral documents, covering areas such as security cooperation, United Nations peacekeeping, semiconductors, health and medicine, disaster management, combating corruption, audio-visual co-production, vocational education, and social security arrangements for Indian workers in Malaysia.

On February 7, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indian diaspora, describing the community as a “living bridge” between India and Malaysia. During the event, he announced the establishment of a new Indian consulate in Malaysia and launched the Thiruvalluvar Scholarship, aimed at enabling Malaysian students to pursue higher education in India.

The Prime Minister said that the growing bilateral relationship is guided by the vision of IMPACT — India–Malaysia Partnership for Advancing Collective Transformation, which provides a strategic framework for future cooperation.

Digital connectivity and fintech collaboration also received a major boost, with an agreement between NPCI International Limited (NIPL) and PayNet Malaysia to develop cross-border digital payment linkages, facilitating seamless transactions and enhancing people-to-people and business ties.
