PM Modi Emphasises Cultural Significance of Sikh Relics Jore Sahib

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the significance of Sikh sacred relics, stating that artefacts such as the Jore Sahib are “as much a part of the glorious Sikh history as they are of the cultural ethos of our nation.”

The Jore Sahib, meaning holy or sacred shoes, are a revered pair of footwear belonging to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur. Considered sacred relics, they are venerated as the personal belongings once worn by these Sikh spiritual leaders. In Punjabi, the word Joda refers to a pair of shoes.

These relics, along with similar possessions of other Gurus such as Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru, hold immense spiritual value for devotees worldwide. They are periodically transported by their official custodians to different locations, allowing pilgrims across the globe to have darshan.

The artefacts, earlier housed at a residence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s relatives in Delhi’s Karol Bagh, came into focus when Puri announced on social media that he, along with a committee of eminent members of the Sikh Sangat, had called on the Prime Minister to discuss their preservation.

The committee also presented a report with recommendations for the safekeeping and dignified display of the relics, ensuring that more devotees can access and pay their respects to these treasured symbols of Sikh heritage.
