PM Modi lays foundation stone for Polypropylene Plant at NRL

Golaghat, Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Assam Bioethanol Plant and laid the foundation stone for a Polypropylene Plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), with an aim to promote clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Highlighting the significance of the projects, the Prime Minister said the Bioethanol Plant, which uses bamboo as feedstock, will not only boost Assam’s green energy sector but also benefit tribal communities and farmers engaged in bamboo cultivation. He added that steady supply arrangements are being put in place, including the setting up of small bamboo-chipping units in the region.

The Polypropylene Plant is expected to play a key role in India’s industrial and manufacturing growth. Polypropylene (PP) is a versatile, partially crystalline thermoplastic polymer derived from the propylene monomer, known for being lightweight, chemically resistant, heat-resistant, and excellent in energy absorption.

  • Applications of Polypropylene:
    • Used in household items, textiles, automotive parts, and medical equipment.
    • Acts both as plastic and fibre across almost all plastics end-use markets.
    • Highly resistant to chemical corrosion.
    • Provides high insulation properties, making it suitable for plastic casings in electrical goods and cables.

These projects mark a significant step towards energy self-reliance, sustainable development, and industrial growth in the Northeast.
