PM Modi paid homage on historic Dandi Satyagraha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on March 12 paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and the brave freedom fighters who participated in the historic Dandi March.

The Salt March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha or Dandi March, was a landmark act of non-violent civil disobedience against British colonial rule in India. On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi began the march from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and travelled to the coastal village of Dandi to protest the heavy salt tax imposed by the British government.

The 24-day march covered about 390 km and culminated in Gandhi symbolically producing salt at Dandi, defying the colonial salt laws. The movement soon triggered the nationwide Civil Disobedience Movement, mobilising thousands of Indians in the struggle for independence.
