PM Modi Pays Tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur on 350th Shaheedi Diwas

On 25 November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur on the occasion of the 350th Shaheedi Diwas, noting that the Guru’s life and supreme sacrifice remain a guiding force for India’s character, culture, and spiritual ethos. Guru Tegh Bahadur, born on April 1, 1621, at Guru Ke Mehal, Amritsar, was a spiritual leader, philosopher, poet, and warrior whose martyrdom continues to inspire generations.

• Stand Against Religious Oppression: The Prime Minister recalled that the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb ordered Guru Sahib’s imprisonment. Despite being offered temptations to compromise, Guru Tegh Bahadur steadfastly refused to abandon his faith and principles. To break his resolve, the Mughals executed his companions Bhai Dayala Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji, and Bhai Mati Das Ji before his eyes.

• Supreme Sacrifice for Dharma: Even in the face of extreme cruelty, Guru Sahib remained unwavering. In deep meditation, he offered his head in defense of faith on November 11, 1675, in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, rather than yielding to forced conversions or performing miracles. His head was carried to Anandpur Sahib by Bhai Jaita Ji and cremated by his son, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, while his body was cremated at Raisina village by Bhai Lakhi Das. Gurudwara Sis Ganj and Gurudwara Rakab Ganj commemorate these historic sites.

• Preserving Faith and Beliefs: PM Modi highlighted that Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice ensured that people’s beliefs were protected from oppression, preserving the sacred tilak of faith. This marked the second martyrdom among Sikh Gurus, the first being Guru Arjan Dev in 1606.

• Legacy of Courage and Dharma: The Prime Minister emphasised that Guru Sahib’s life exemplifies courage, steadfastness, and commitment to dharma, serving as an enduring inspiration for generations across India.
