Preah Vihear Temple

Thailand and Cambodia are currently engaged in their worst fighting in over a decade, exchanging heavy artillery fire across their disputed border. The conflict has resulted in at least 16 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of people.

Escalation of Tensions:

  • Recent Spark: Tensions began escalating in May 2025 following the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief exchange of gunfire. This incident triggered diplomatic spats and has now led to full-blown armed clashes.
  • Long-Standing Border Dispute: For over a century, Thailand and Cambodia have contested sovereignty at various undemarcated points along their 817 km (508 miles) land border. This border was first mapped by France in 1907 when Cambodia was a French colony.

Historical Site Disputes Fueling Nationalism:

  • Angkor Wat Incident (2003): Claims over historical sites have repeatedly ignited nationalist tensions. In 2003, rioters torched the Thai embassy and Thai businesses in Phnom Penh over an alleged remark by a Thai celebrity questioning Cambodia’s jurisdiction over its World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat temple.
  • Preah Vihear Temple at the Core: The 11th-century Hindu temple of Preah Vihear (or Khao Phra Viharn in Thailand) has been at the heart of the dispute for decades, with both Bangkok and Phnom Penh claiming historical ownership.
    • 1962 ICJ Ruling: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) initially awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962, but Thailand continued to lay claim to the surrounding land.
    • 2008 Escalation: Tension escalated significantly in 2008 after Cambodia attempted to list the Preah Vihear temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site, leading to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, including a weeklong artillery exchange in 2011.
    • 2013 ICJ Clarification: Two years later, Cambodia sought an interpretation of the 1962 verdict. The ICJ again ruled in its favour, explicitly stating that the land around the temple was also part of Cambodia and ordering Thai troops to withdraw.

About Preah Vihear Temple:

  • Location: Situated on the edge of a plateau that dominates the plain of Cambodia.
  • Dedication: The temple is dedicated to Shiva.
  • UNESCO Heritage Site: It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as an outstanding masterpiece of Khmer architecture, noted for its “purity” in both plan and decorative detail.
