President Droupadi Murmu Undertakes Submerged Sortie Aboard INS Vaghsheer

President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, undertook a submerged (dived) sortie onboard the Indian Navy submarine INS Vaghsheer on December 28, 2025, on the Western Seaboard. She embarked the submarine from Karwar Naval Harbour, Karnataka, marking her first-ever operational embarkation onboard a submarine.

Symbol of Civil-Military Engagement
The sortie reflects the continued engagement of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces with the military in operational settings. Earlier, in November 2024, the President had witnessed an operational demonstration onboard INS Vikrant, India’s indigenous aircraft carrier.

About INS Vaghsheer
INS Vaghsheer is the sixth submarine of Project 75 (Kalvari class) and was delivered to the Indian Navy on January 9, 2025, after the successful completion of mandatory sea trials. The submarine enhances India’s underwater combat capability and maritime deterrence.

Indigenous Construction under Strategic Collaboration
The submarine has been constructed by Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, in collaboration with Naval Group, France, under the Project 75 programme. The project represents a significant milestone in India’s efforts towards indigenous defence manufacturing and capability development.
