Procurement and Marketing of Minor Forest Produce

Government procurement of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) at Minimum Support Price (MSP) witnessed a steep decline in 2024–25, according to data tabled in Parliament on February 5, 2026. The data shows that procurement across 19 States fell by over 92% compared to the previous year.

In 2022–23, total MSP procurement of MFPs in these States stood at 26,744 metric tonnes (MT), valued at around ₹94.23 crore. This figure nearly doubled in 2023–24, when over 51,400 MT of MFPs were procured, worth approximately ₹124.3 crore.

However, in 2024–25, procurement dropped sharply to just 3,920.2 MT, with a total value of about ₹16.68 crore.

The decline was not uniform across States. While Mizoram, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Gujarat reported an increase in procurement, several others, including Odisha, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh, registered significant reductions.

The MSP procurement of MFPs is carried out under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM), implemented by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED). The scheme aims to support tribal livelihoods by ensuring remunerative prices for forest produce.

Under PMJVM, the Ministry notifies MSP for MFPs and provides revolving funds to State Governments for procurement at the declared prices. Notably, the number of MFPs eligible for MSP has expanded significantly—from 10 items in 2013–14 to 87 items at present. Proceeds from the sale of procured MFPs are deposited back into the revolving funds by the States.
