Putin Warns U.S. Against Supplying Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning to the United States, cautioning that the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would lead to a “dangerous new escalation” in the ongoing conflict. The war in Ukraine — Europe’s deadliest since World War II — has already triggered the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Russian officials now describe the situation as a “hot conflict” with Western nations.

Capabilities of the Tomahawk Missile

The Tomahawk is a long-range, subsonic cruise missile capable of being launched from ships, submarines, or ground platforms. With a range between 1,250 km and 2,500 km (777–1,553 miles), it can deliver high-explosive warheads capable of destroying hardened military targets such as bunkers. Designed to fly at low altitudes and avoid radar detection, Tomahawks have been a key component of U.S. precision-strike capabilities since their introduction in the mid-1980s.

U.S. Production Plans

Production of the missile has continued steadily in recent years, averaging 55 to 90 units annually. According to Pentagon budget documents, the United States plans to purchase 57 new Tomahawk missiles in 2026, underscoring their continued strategic value amid growing global tensions.
