Rajnath Singh Flags Off Historic All-Women Tri-Service Sailing Expedition

Mumbai, September 11, 2025 — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually flagged off Samudra Pradakshina, a historic tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition, from the Gateway of India, Mumbai.

First-of-its-kind Global Voyage

The expedition, the first of its kind in the world, will see 10 women officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force undertake a nine-month-long voyage on the indigenously-built Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni.

Route and Challenges

The officers will follow an easterly route spanning nearly 26,000 nautical miles, crossing the Equator twice and rounding the three great Capes — Leeuwin, Horn and Good Hope. The crew is expected to return to Mumbai in May 2026.

Inspiration from Past Achievements

Mr. Singh recalled the feat of Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K. and Rupa A., who circumnavigated the globe on INSV Tarini, and expressed confidence that the Triveni team will set another global benchmark in maritime adventure.
