Rakhine Corridor

A proposed “Rakhine Corridor” — a humanitarian passage from southeastern Bangladesh (Cox’s Bazar) into Myanmar’s conflict-ridden Rakhine State — has ignited a sharp political and military standoff in Bangladesh.

Key Details of the Rakhine Corridor:

  • Purpose: To provide a protected, internationally monitored humanitarian route for:
    • Delivery of aid to Rakhine civilians.
    • Evacuation of wounded individuals.
    • Potential repatriation of Rohingya refugees displaced during Myanmar’s 2017 military crackdown.
  • Coordination: Envisioned to be overseen by the United Nations or an international coalition, with logistical and security backing from supporting nations.

Domestic Conflict:

  • Support: Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has publicly backed the proposal.
  • Opposition: Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman strongly opposes it, calling it a “bloody corridor” and warning that it:
    • Threatens Bangladesh’s national sovereignty.
    • Risks the creation of a foreign-controlled buffer zone in the region.
    • Could destabilize regional security, especially if undertaken without military consultation.

Strategic Concerns:

  • The corridor cuts through a sensitive geopolitical zone, involving the Rohingya refugee crisis, ongoing ethnic conflict in Myanmar, and international involvement in sovereign territory.
  • The Bangladesh military fears erosion of its influence and unilateral foreign imposition near its border.
