Ramnami tribe

During his visit to Raipur to attend the Silver Jubilee celebration of Chhattisgarh Foundation Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol to accept a traditional gesture of honour from members of the Ramnami tribe.

  • Two members of the community adorned the Prime Minister with their traditional headgear — a peacock-feather crown — movingly symbolizing their deep reverence.

About the Ramnami Samaj:

  • The Ramnami community is known for their devotion to Lord Ram and their life centered on chanting the name of Ram.
  • The sect emerged in the 19th century in central and northern Chhattisgarh as a peaceful resistance movement against the caste system.
  • Over a century ago, the Ramnamis tattooed the name of “Ram” on their bodies and faces, expressing their belief in the omnipresence of God.

Spiritual Philosophy:

  • The Ramnamis believe God (Ram) resides in all beings and can be worshipped in any form — with or without rituals, robes, or temple structures.
  • They emphasize that chanting the name of Ram creates a direct and personal connection between the devotee and the divine.

Cultural Symbolism:

  • The peacock-feather crown, the community’s emblematic headgear, signifies purity, devotion, and humility.
  • PM Modi’s gesture in accepting it was seen as a mark of respect for India’s rich spiritual and social diversity.
