Ras Laffan LNG Facility

Iran has reportedly struck critical energy infrastructure in Qatar just hours after Israel targeted a major gas field in the Persian Gulf.

The crisis began when Israel carried out strikes on the South Pars Gas Field—the world’s largest natural gas reserve shared between Iran and Qatar. In retaliation, Iranian missiles on March 19 hit facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export infrastructure.

Strategic Significance

Ras Laffan Industrial City is operated by QatarEnergy and houses key LNG liquefaction plants and export terminals. The facility accounts for nearly 20% of global LNG supply, making it a cornerstone of global energy markets.

Iran has also warned that it may extend its strikes to energy installations in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.

Implications for India

The development holds serious implications for India’s energy security:

  • India relies on LNG imports for nearly 50% of its natural gas consumption.
  • Over 40% of India’s LNG imports come from Qatar, most of it sourced from Ras Laffan.
  • Any disruption could lead to supply shortages and price spikes in domestic energy markets.
