Record foodgrain production marks highest growth in a decade

India’s foodgrain production for the 2024–25 crop year has reached 357.73 million tonnes, the highest ever reported.

Strong Growth Over the Decade

  • The increase represents about 106 million tonnes more than in 2015–16, when production was 251.54 million tonnes.
  • According to the DD News report, this is the highest growth in foodgrain production in the past ten years.

Crop‑wise Breakdown

  • Rice: 1501.84 lakh tonnes (i.e., 150.184 Mt), with a jump of 123.59 lakh tonnes from the previous year.
  • Wheat: 1179.45 lakh tonnes (117.945 Mt), which is up by 46.53 lakh tonnes over last year.
  • Maize: 434.09 lakh tonnes.
  • Nutri & Coarse Cereals: 639.21 lakh tonnes.
  • Millets (“Shri Anna”): 185.92 lakh tonnes.
  • Pulses: Total pulses output is 256.83 lakh tonnes; moong: 42.44 lakh tonnes; chickpea (chana): 111.14 lakh tonnes.
  • Oilseeds: 429.89 lakh tonnes; driven by soybean (152.68 lakh tonnes) and groundnut (119.42 lakh tonnes).
  • Sugarcane: 4546.11 lakh tonnes.
  • Cotton: 297.24 lakh bales.
  • Jute & Mesta: 88.02 lakh bales.

Government Support & Policy Role

  • Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan credited the strong performance to MSP procurement (for crops like tur, urad, chana, moong) which is supporting farmers.
  • The report suggests that ongoing welfare programmes and targeted policy support are helping sustain this growth.
  • Chouhan expressed confidence that the Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission will further boost pulse production.
