Redevelopment of Batadrava Than Inaugurated in Assam

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah inaugurated the redevelopment project of Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji, in Nagaon district, Assam, on 29 December. An ‘Aavirbhav Kshetra’ dedicated to the saint has also been created at the site.

Batadrava Than: A Spiritual Nucleus
Batadrava Than is the sacred place from where Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji propagated the Neo-Vaishnavite faith across Assam and the wider Northeast. The site holds immense religious, cultural, and historical significance.

Eka Sarana Nama Dharma
Shankar Dev Ji initiated the Eka Sarana Nama Dharma, also known as Mahapurushiya Dharma.

  • Core principle: Worship of a single deity, Vishnu, primarily in the form of Lord Krishna.
  • Philosophical foundation: Influenced mainly by the Bhagavata Purana, along with the Bhagavad Gita and Vamana Purana.
  • Emphasis on two forms of bhakti:
    • Shravana (hearing the name of God)
    • Kirtana (chanting the name of God)

Institutional and Social Reforms
To spread his spiritual and philosophical ideas, Shankar Dev Ji established:

  • Namghars – community prayer halls
  • Satras – monastic institutions
    These institutions promoted congregational worship, social equality, and moral discipline, becoming pillars of Assamese society.

Contribution to Arts and Culture
Mahapurush Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji made unparalleled contributions to Indian performing arts, including:

  • Ankiya Naats (religious plays blending philosophy and classical drama)
  • Borgeets (devotional songs)
  • Bhaonas (theatrical performances)
  • Sattriya dance, now recognised as one of India’s classical dance forms
