Rising ocean threatens survival of Nyangai islanders

The inhabitants of Nyangai, an island in the Turtle Islands off southern Sierra Leone, are facing severe consequences of climate change despite having made virtually no contribution to global warming.

Key points:

  • First Climate-Displaced People: The people of Nyangai are widely considered the first community in Sierra Leone to be displaced by climate change.
  • Cause of Displacement: Rising global temperatures are melting ice caps, causing sea levels to swell around the archipelago, leading to significant land loss.
  • Impact on Residents: The majority of Nyangai’s residents have lost their belongings and homes multiple times, forcing them to crowd further into the island’s shrinking interior.
  • Island Shrinkage: In less than 10 years, the island has lost two-thirds of its surface area. It now measures only about 200 meters long and 100 meters wide (approximately 650 by 330 feet).
  • Minimal Contribution to Global Warming: The inhabitants of Nyangai have made virtually no contribution to the fossil fuel emissions driving global warming, highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.
