Rooftop Solar Installations Cross 30 Lakh Homes Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that installation of rooftop solar systems has crossed 30 lakh households since February 2024 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Launched by Narendra Modi on 13 February 2024, the scheme aims to provide free electricity to households through subsidized rooftop solar panels, reducing energy costs and boosting renewable energy adoption.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • 30 lakh+ households already equipped with rooftop solar systems.
  • Target of 1 crore households could generate about 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity.
  • Estimated reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over 25 years.
  • Potential savings of about ₹75,000 crore annually in government electricity costs.

Financial Benefits

  • Collateral-free loans at around 7% interest for rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW.
  • Subsidy amount varies with electricity consumption and system capacity.
  • Maximum subsidy for systems above 3 kW capped at ₹78,000.
  • Households can apply and select vendors via the National Portal.

Model Solar Village Component

Under the “Model Solar Village” initiative:

  • One Model Solar Village per district across India.
  • Budget allocation: ₹800 crore, with ₹1 crore per village.
  • Aim: Promote solar adoption and rural energy self-reliance.
