SBS-III programme

The Union government has ordered the fast-tracking of the launch of 52 dedicated surveillance satellites, aiming to enhance round-the-clock monitoring of India’s coastline and land borders.

SBS-III Programme Details:

  • Approval: In October 2024, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee approved $3.2 billion for the SBS-III programme.
  • Timeline: This program aims to develop next-generation satellites over the next decade.
  • Manufacturing & Launch:
    • ISRO will be responsible for manufacturing and launching the first 21 satellites.
    • Private companies will handle the remaining 31 satellites.
  • Operation Oversight: The Defence Space Agency (DSA) will oversee the operation of this newly launched satellite system.

Strategic Benefits and Impact:

  • Self-Reliance: Successful implementation of SBS-III will significantly boost India’s self-reliance in space-based surveillance, reducing its dependence on other countries.
  • Enhanced Monitoring: The new system will allow for more clear and accurate focus on:
    • The Pakistan and China borders.
    • The Indian Ocean Region.
  • Past Successes: India’s existing satellites, such as Cartosat and RISAT, have already demonstrated their utility by helping defence forces to:
    • Track enemy mobilization.
    • Confirm strike impact.
    • Maintain real-time situational awareness, thereby preventing major damage to the country’s military assets.
