Second World Summit for Social Development 2025

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), through its resolutions 78/261 and 78/318, decided to convene the “World Social Summit 2025”, also known as the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Venue and Dates:

  • Held at the Qatar National Convention Centre, Doha, Qatar.
  • Dates: 4–6 November 2025.
  • Level: Heads of State or Government.

Purpose:

  • To reaffirm global commitment to the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and its Programme of Action.
  • To accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • To address persisting gaps in achieving inclusive and sustainable social development.

Doha Political Declaration:

  • Adopted at the 2025 Summit, it reaffirms commitment to the Copenhagen Declaration and the 2030 Agenda.
  • Anchored on three mutually reinforcing pillars:
    1. Poverty eradication
    2. Full and productive employment and decent work for all
    3. Social inclusion

Key Highlights:

  • Recognizes social justice as a foundation for peace, security, and human rights.
  • Reiterates the pledge to “leave no one behind.”
  • Calls for urgent climate action consistent with the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.
  • Reaffirms the Rio principles, including common but differentiated responsibilities (CBDR).
  • Encourages international cooperation and solidarity to achieve social and environmental sustainability.

Significance:

  • The World Social Summit 2025 serves as a global recommitment to inclusive development, echoing the goals of Copenhagen 1995 and aligning them with the challenges of the 21st century—inequality, climate change, and social justice.
