Sigandur Bridge

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently inaugurated the Sigandur bridge across the Sharavathi backwaters in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district, Karnataka. This bridge is now India’s second longest cable-stayed bridge.

  • Location: Built across the Sharavathi backwaters in Sagar taluk, Shivamogga district, Karnataka.
  • Length and Width: The bridge spans 2.44 kilometers and is 16 meters wide.
  • Cost: Constructed at a cost exceeding ₹470 crore.
  • Connectivity: It connects Sagara and Marakutika.
  • Reduced Distance: The bridge will significantly reduce the travel distance from Sagara town to Sigandur, where the famous Chowdeshwari temple is located.
  • Historical Context: Its construction addresses the loss of connectivity faced by many villages in Sagar taluk after the Linganamakki dam was built in the 1960s.
  • Naming: The minister named the bridge after Goddess Chowdeshwari Devi.
