Standardise default temperatures of air conditioners

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal announced on June 10, 2025, that the Indian government is developing a framework to standardize the default temperature of air conditioners, including those in automobiles, within the range of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius.

  • This initiative is being discussed with both appliance manufacturers and State governments.
  • The announcement comes amidst a significant increase in India’s peak power demand, which reached 241 GW on June 9.
  • The government’s objective behind this move is to enhance energy efficiency across the country, with the minister highlighting that a reduction of even one degree Celsius can lead to a 6% energy saving.
  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), operating under the Ministry of Power, is actively involved in preparing this framework.
  • The BEE is responsible for promoting and encouraging the use of energy-efficient processes, equipment, devices, and systems.
