Supreme Court Extends Tenure of Gita Mittal Committee

The Supreme Court on 28 January 2026 extended the tenure of its all-women committee of three former High Court judges, constituted to monitor rehabilitation efforts in violence-affected Manipur, by another six months. The committee was originally set up in August 2023.

Composition of the Committee
The panel is headed by Justice Gita Mittal, former Chief Justice of a High Court, and includes Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, a retired judge of the Bombay High Court, and Justice Asha Menon, a former judge of the Delhi High Court.

Role and Contribution
The committee has functioned as the Supreme Court’s “eyes and ears” on the ground, providing a crucial “healing touch” in the northeastern State. So far, it has submitted over 40 reports to the apex court, offering detailed assessments of the situation and progress of relief and rehabilitation measures.

Through its reports, the committee has highlighted core areas requiring focused intervention, including:

  • Rehabilitation of women victims of violence
  • Comprehensive psychological assistance and mental health care
  • Medical care and health services
