Sustainable Agriculture Day

he Maharashtra government has announced that August 7 will be celebrated annually as “Sustainable Agriculture Day” to honor Bharat Ratna Dr. M. S. Swaminathan on his birth centenary. Dr. Swaminathan is widely recognized as the architect of India’s Green Revolution.

Key Points of the Announcement:

  • Tribute to a Visionary: The decision, shared by State Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, serves as a tribute to Dr. Swaminathan’s monumental contributions to agriculture. His pioneering research in developing high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice helped India achieve food self-sufficiency, pulling the nation back from the brink of famine in the 1960s.
  • Establishment of Bio-Happiness Centres: In addition to the annual observance, the state government announced the creation of “Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Bio-Happiness Centres” in all agricultural universities across Maharashtra. These centers will focus on promoting sustainable farming, climate adaptation technology, and agri-entrepreneurship, embodying Swaminathan’s vision of an “Evergreen Revolution.”
  • National and International Recognition: Dr. Swaminathan’s lifelong contributions have been acknowledged both in India and globally.
    • The Government of India awarded him the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in 2024.
    • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has referred to him as the “Father of Economic Ecology” for his pioneering work in integrating ecological principles with economic development.
