Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2025

India has achieved a significant milestone by securing a place among the top 100 countries in the latest Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2025. The report, published on June 24, 2025 by the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDR), ranks 193 countries based on their progress toward achieving the SDGs.

Key findings from the 10th Sustainable Development Report (SDR):

  • India’s Ranking: India stands at 99th place on the 2025 SDG Index with a score of 67. This marks its first time entering the top 100.
  • Neighboring Countries’ Performance:
    • Bhutan: 74th (70.5 points)
    • Nepal: 85th (68.6 points)
    • Bangladesh: 114th (63.9 points)
    • Pakistan: 140th (57 points)
  • Other Major Economies:
    • China: 49th (74.4 points)
    • United States: 44th (75.2 points)
  • Global Progress Stalled: The report’s authors highlight that global SDG progress has stalled. Only 17% of the 17 targets adopted by UN member countries in 2015 are projected to be achieved by 2030.
  • Top Performers: European countries continue to lead the index, particularly the Nordic nations.
    • Finland ranks first, followed by Sweden (second) and Denmark (third).
    • A total of 19 out of the top 20 countries are from Europe.
  • Areas of Strong Progress (Globally): Despite the overall slowdown, most UN member states have shown strong progress in targets related to access to basic services and infrastructure, including:
    • Mobile broadband use (SDG 9)
    • Access to electricity (SDG 7)
    • Internet use (SDG 9)
    • Under-five mortality rate (SDG 3)
    • Neonatal mortality (SDG 3)
  • United States’ Position: The United States ranks last (193rd) for the second consecutive year. This comes after its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO), and its formal opposition to the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.
